Why You Pretend You're Okay When You're Not

Something I've noticed

Have you ever answered...

"I'm fine."

...even when you weren't?

I know I have.

Sometimes it's easier than explaining what's really going on.

Sometimes you don't even know how to explain it yourself.

So you smile.

Carry on.

And hope tomorrow feels a little easier.

My experience

Living with anxiety and depression has taught me that not every difficult day looks difficult from the outside.

I've had days where I've laughed with people...

held conversations...

gone to work...

and still felt like I was carrying a weight that nobody else could see.

That's one of the hardest parts about invisible struggles.

People often see the smile.

Not the effort it took to wear it.

Why we do it

I don't think most people hide how they're feeling because they want to.

Often...

they don't want to worry anyone.

They don't want to feel like a burden.

Or maybe they've convinced themselves that nobody would understand anyway.

So they keep everything inside.

And over time...

pretending to be okay becomes exhausting.

Something worth remembering

You don't have to tell everyone how you're feeling.

Privacy is okay.

But carrying everything on your own isn't always strength.

Sometimes the strongest thing we can do...

is let someone know we're struggling.

Even if it's just one trusted person.

You don't have to carry everything by yourself.

Something to think about

When someone asks how you're doing...

what would happen if you answered honestly?

Not with your whole life story.

Just honestly.

Maybe...

"I'm finding things a bit difficult at the moment."

Sometimes that one sentence is enough to remind us that we're not as alone as we thought.

Closing Thoughts

Not every struggle is visible.

Not every smile tells the full story.

And not everyone who says they're okay...

actually is.

Be kind.

Not just to yourself...

but to the people around you too.

You never really know what someone else is carrying.
