Why Your Mind Always Expects the Worst
Something I've noticed
Have you ever noticed how quickly your mind jumps to the worst-case scenario?
Someone doesn't reply to your message.
You assume you've upset them.
Your manager says they want to talk.
You immediately think you've done something wrong.
Something small happens...
and somehow your mind has already written the ending.
I've caught myself doing this more times than I'd like to admit.
My experience
Living with anxiety has taught me that my mind likes certainty.
The problem is...
when certainty isn't available...
it often fills in the blanks with fear.
I've spent hours worrying about conversations that never happened.
Problems that never appeared.
Situations that existed only in my imagination.
The strange thing is...
when everything turns out okay...
my brain rarely remembers that part.
Why it happens
Our minds are designed to protect us.
They scan for danger.
They look for problems.
They prepare us for what might go wrong.
In small doses, that's helpful.
But anxiety can turn that protection into overprotection.
Suddenly...
every unknown feels like a threat.
Every silence feels meaningful.
Every delay feels personal.
Something worth remembering
Just because your mind imagines the worst...
doesn't mean it's predicting the future.
It's trying to protect you.
Not tell you what's going to happen.
There's an important difference.
Learning to recognise that difference has helped me become a little kinder to myself.
Something to think about
The next time your mind starts writing a worst-case scenario...
pause for a moment.
Ask yourself:
"Do I know this is true...
or is my anxiety filling in the blanks?"
Sometimes that one question is enough to slow everything down.
Closing Thoughts
Your thoughts can feel incredibly convincing.
Especially when anxiety is involved.
But thoughts aren't facts.
And just because your mind tells a frightening story...
doesn't mean you have to believe every chapter.
